Making a Difference

We are a Place to Make a Difference!

Our orientation is to say YES to support those who want to try something new, or explore different arenas of service in their lives – as far as it is within our capability and in accord with our values for ministry.

There’s a joke about churches--that if you want to stay anonymous…go to a large church, but if you want to know you are needed…go to a small church.  South Mountain Community Church is definitely the latter!  We are a small congregation seeking to follow God’s call to make a difference in our neighborhood.

The presence of each member, friend, and visitor makes a difference to all of us!  We are on a first name basis with each other, and believe that each one of us – no matter who you are, where you come from, what your abilities or capabilities are, have a gift from God to be shared.  These gifts give our lives purpose and passion.  We may know what our gifts are and are finding ways to encourage each other to use them…or we may be trying to discover our gifts.

Some of the ways our members and friends are making a difference are:

  • Serving as volunteers for care-giving in the community through ViCaP Faith in Action.
  • Collecting many items for recycling and reusing by other organizations.
  • Fix-it and maintenance projects around the church
  • Serving on boards and committees of both our church and our denominations
  • Active in inter-faith groups and events
  • Serving as camp counselors, mentors for children and youth.
  • Advocacy for various social justice issues
  • Offering extravagant hospitality to other organizations and to people with whom we share our space.
  • Creating and visioning new directions and ministries of service.
  • Praying, phone-calling and letter-writing.
  • Offering music in worship and at other events.
